Intersection Work - SR 522 and 68th Ave. NE
Crews are continuing undergrounding utilities in a joint utility trench at the intersection of SR 522 and 68th Ave. NE. This work will start on the west side of 68th Ave. NE and cross the intersection. This work is scheduled to last through the end of July. It is necessary that this work be completed at night as lanes will need to be shifted on SR 522. This work will limit traffic to one lane in each direction between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.; flaggers and traffic control will be in place to assist vehicles and pedestrians.

Utility Work - 68th Ave. NE
Crews are scheduled to continue undergrounding utilities in a joint utility trench along the west side of 68th Ave. NE south of the SR 522 intersection on July 1. While crews are widening 68th Ave. NE in this area, there will be times when the westernmost lane of the roadway will be closed. This work should last for a couple of weeks. Lane shifts, flaggers and traffic control are in place to safely guide vehicles and pedestrians through the construction area. Please note that some of this work is weather dependent.

Intersection Open as a Four-Way Stop – 68th Ave. NE and NE 181st St.
On Monday, June 22, crews completed repaving the 68th Ave. NE and NE 181st St. intersection and reopened the roadway as a four-way stop. Originally slated to reopen in early July, the intersection paving was completed ahead of schedule. The four-way stop will be in place until mid-September when the new traffic signals are installed and activated.

Throughout the summer crews will remain on-site to complete various improvements around the intersection. Lanes on 68th Ave. NE and NE 181st St. may be limited intermittently during construction, at which time flaggers and traffic control will guide vehicles and pedestrians through the work area.

Please continue to refrain from cutting through business parking lots to avoid traffic on 68th Ave. NE. Kenmore Police are monitoring the area and ticketing drivers. We thank you for your patience during this intersection work and roadway closure.

Night Work – Pavement Overlay
Drivers are now experiencing a smoother ride on SR 522 with the completion of the pavement overlay. Crews are now completing minor adjustments which are scheduled to be finished later this week.

Utility Work - North side of SR 522
Crews have completed undergrounding utilities in a joint utility trench and are now installing curbs and forming and pouring sidewalks between 65th Ave. NE and 68th Ave. NE. A pedestrian detour will be in place while the concrete cures. It is anticipated that sidewalk installation will take several weeks to be completed. This work is weather dependent.

Lane shifts, flaggers and traffic control are in place to safely guide vehicles and pedestrians through the construction area. This utility work requires the closure of the Business Access and Transit (BAT) lane on the north side of the street between 65th Ave. NE and 73rd Ave. NE. Access to businesses and residences will remain open at all times. The bus stops located at 68th Ave. NE (on both the north and south sides) will remain open, though buses will stop in the traffic lane.

Median Construction - SR 522
Medians have been constructed along SR 522 between 73rd Ave. NE and 83rd Pl. NE. Crews completed landscaping the medians and are finishing curb work.

The new traffic medians will reduce the number of areas where turns can be made, however, U-turns will be implemented along the corridor to provide access routes to businesses and residents. The new traffic medians will reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, increase vehicle and pedestrian safety and add to the aesthetic cohesiveness of the corridor.

Construction Hours and Business Access
Daytime construction runs weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If necessary, work will continue on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. Occasionally construction may continue as late as 7:00 p.m. Night hours will be from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Throughout construction the project team is committed to keeping businesses accessible. “Businesses open during construction” signs are placed near businesses along SR 522 where work is taking place.
