Project Background
The City of Kenmore will be improving SR 522 to increase safety, improve transit reliability, and ease congestion. Drivers and pedestrians will see many benefits to the project including:

  • Improved transit reliability with completed Business Access and Transit lanes
  • An enhanced corridor with new landscaping and medians
  • Increased safety with new sidewalks, street lighting and traffic signals

    East segment – 73rd Ave. NE to 83rd Ave. NE
    Construction for this section of SR 522 is currently taking place and will continue through 2008. Some of the improvements include:
  • Extending Business Access and Transit lanes from 73rd Ave NE to the east city limits at 83rd Ave NE
  • Replacing the bridge over Swamp Creek
  • New traffic signals at Kenmore Square and 83rd Place NE
  • New sidewalks, medians, street lighting and landscaping
  • Burke-Gilman Trail – 73rd Ave. NE pedestrian underpass
    Construction is now underway on a new pedestrian underpass at 73rd Ave. NE that will significantly improve safety for all trail users.

    Central segment – 65th Ave. NE to 73rd Ave. NE
    Construction on SR 522 between 65th Ave NE to 73rd Ave NE is currently being advertised for construction bids and construction is expected to begin in late spring/early summer 2008. Improvements include:

  • Widening the intersections of 68th Ave NE and 73rd Ave NE
  • Re-aligning the intersection of 68th Ave NE and NE 181st Street into one intersection
  • Converting utilities from overhead to underground
  • New sidewalks, street lighting, landscaping and medians
  • West segment – 60th Ave. NE to 65th Ave. NE
    Additional work between 60th Ave NE and 65th Ave NE, including intersection improvements at 61st Ave NE and adding new sidewalks, will take place in the future as additional funding becomes available. The project team is continuing to work on project design and right of way acquisition.

    Project funding
    The improvements to SR 522 will cost approximately $80 million with support from a variety of sources including:

  • City of Kenmore
  • Washington State Transportation Improvement Board
  • King County
  • Washington State Department of Transportation
  • Sound Transit
  • Gas tax
  •
